My friend, Al Weber
Al Weber passed away Feb 27, 2016. He was my friend, although others certainly knew him better or longer. What we shared, he shared with all: his love of photography. Because we both had a similar sense of simple designs and abstracts, we enjoyed sharing our images with each other. More than any other single person, Al changed the course of my journey thru photography. Yes, I’ve been shooting for.. Read More
And one from the Santa Cruz Art League National Show
There’s nothing like the prime position!
Show at The Triton Art Museum
Actually, this sorta belongs in the “Events” blog, but that’s a text-only blog, so here’s the poster for the show. I hope my readers get a chance to come by and see the images.
Extrapolation: is the printer driver the same or better at enlargements?
I’ve seen this all over the web: “Don’t bother with fancy and expensive extrapolation software. Just let the printer driver do the enlargement. It’s just as good, if not better.” Overly optimistic, I’d say… but you tell me. Below is the same image extrapolated to 300% of the original size. On the left is the work of PhotoZoom Pro v6, and on the right is the Epson 9890 driver. The.. Read More
borderless printing on an Epson 9890 – solved
I’ve had trouble getting a 24” borderless print on my Epson 9890. No matter what I did, it was off by at least an eighth of an inch, (and often more) cause me to lose details on the edge, not to mention ending up with a print that was less than 24” wide. In many cases, this would not be much of an issue, but my work is art.. Read More
“Up-Rez” – “Extrapolation” or just “enlarge”…
… regardless of what you call it, it’s making a digital image larger, so you can print a bigger version than your camera’s native resolution allows. Epson printers want 360 dpi, and others want 300 dpi for the best results. (If you’re printing on canvas, you can go down to 240 dpi.) But what if you want to print a 44” wide photo? You have to enlarge it, and.. Read More
Minutiae: it’s all in the details
Minutiae “…the shapes nearest shapelessness awe us most, suggest the god.” (A. R. Ammons) “Beauty is the Universal seen.” (Alfred Stieglitz)* I’ve been working on this for several months now, and as far as I know, it’s an original idea: make extremely tiny works which are designed to become “art” only after they are massively enlarged. In doing the art small, the intent shows thru, but the final image comes.. Read More
How to release the head on an Epson 7890 – 9890
The old “turn it on, and yank the power cord” is hardly the safest way to release the print head on an extremely expensive printer. Here’s the correct way to do it (no dangerous moves required) : Start in service mode* select self-testing -> met Adjustment -> PG Adj Press OK while Un Cap is displayed. That releases the head. When you are done, press.. Read More
Printing a printer profile target on OS X.
Most of you know that it’s not any longer conveniently possible to print a file with absolutely NO color management tweaking the colors. Between Apple, Adobe and Epson, there just isn’t a simple and obvious way to print out a sample target for reading with your ColorMunki or i1 Photo Pro. There are three, in fact. One is well-known: get Adobe’s Color Printer Utility, which is free from them at:.. Read More
How to prepare an image for a photo contest
Entering photography contests is fun, but the first few times it can be a bit daunting. The contest always specifies what format an image file must be, in order to be accepted. And besides that, it limits the size… and besides -that- you want them to see it with the same colors as you see on your own monitor. Well, here’s the step-by-step to doing just that. http://www.valleau.gallery/how2/enter-a-contest/
