{"id":512,"date":"2023-09-26T22:19:02","date_gmt":"2023-09-26T22:19:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/valleau.art\/blog\/?p=512"},"modified":"2023-09-26T22:19:02","modified_gmt":"2023-09-26T22:19:02","slug":"infinite-reboot-loop-installing-sonoma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/valleau.art\/blog\/infinite-reboot-loop-installing-sonoma\/","title":{"rendered":"infinite reboot loop installing Sonoma"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are a lot of ways a system update can fail \u00a0and FWIW, my Studio upgrade to Sonoma did not go well.(Update on the laptop went fine, however.)<\/p>\n<p>On my Mac Studio, I got an incomplete install with an infinite loop of reboots:<\/p>\n<p>Got to the second reboot, with white logo and thermometer and then \u00a0got stuck in reboot loop cycle at about 2\/3 done.<\/p>\n<p>So, I did a restart in recovery mode and tried an install from there. Same thing, but this time instead of just a loop of \u00a0reboots, I got a message that there was &#8220;no administrator &#8220;on the machine, and install could not recover.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how I got out of that:<\/p>\n<p>Opened the Terminal and entering<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0rm \/Volumes\/OSX\/var\/db\/.AppleSetupDone<\/p>\n<p>(where OSX is my main volume name, so you&#8217;ll need to replace it with your own volume name.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>NOTE: \u00a0(Do this carefully if you&#8217;re following along at home: &#8220;rm&#8221; is &#8220;remove&#8221; and you don&#8217;t want to mess that up! \u00a0Copy\/paste is a good idea.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Next I rebooted back into recovery and using the &#8220;reinstall Sonoma&#8221; <em>almost<\/em> worked this time. At least it seemed to complete.<\/p>\n<p>However, when I rebooted again, I found myself stuck at the 2\/3 thermometer, so I powered down and unplugged all &#8220;extra&#8221; cables from the studio (USB, Thunderbolt etc) and rebooted.
