How to reset your internet connection

tvalleau

Hard to say how many people this will apply to, but it’s 100% for me.

I have cable internet from Xfinity (aka Comcast).

Mine is a two-piece setup: a modem and a wifi/router.I have my own Bitsurfr DOCIS 3.1 modem and an Archer AX90 (TP-Link 6600) wifi 6 router.

To reset my system properly AND get maximum speed, these are the steps:

1. turn off BOTH items. Power off the modem AND power off the router.

2. leave the router OFF and power on the modem.

3. wait for the modem lights to stop flashing, and display as solid lights (first green, then solid blue, in my case).

4. once I’m sure the modem is stable, ONLY THEN do I power on the router.

Failing to follow these exact steps (such as just power-cycling one or the other) will still get me a connection, but at 1/4 the advertised rate.

In other words, I get 900 down if I follow these steps, but  240-ish if I don’t.

As noted, YMMV.
